Charnos

The brand

Charles Noskwith founded Charnos in 1935 as a hosiery brand and set about making it an innovator of new ideas in the industry. Charnos was a pioneer and responsible for many firsts in the UK, such as stretch and run-resistant stockings.

In 1958, Charnos widened its offer by creating a lingerie line to complement the already successful hosiery brand and went on to apply its trendsetting ethos to underwear. As the first British company to introduce anti-static nylon to the market, Charnos was responsible for the most important breakthrough in lingerie since nylon took over from silk.

Innovation powered on and in 1999 Charnos made its most high-profile technical advance to date with the launch of Bioform, a bra designed to lift and push breasts from the sides with flexible plastic inserts rather than wires, which can dig into the skin. Designed in conjunction with male British engineers, Bioform revolutionised lingerie for a whole generation of women.

The collection

Charnos continues to be a leading light in the lingerie world, creating shape-enhancing, sensual, feminine lingerie with a luxurious European style that encapsulates the 1950s elegance and sophisticated culture the brand is renowned for. As well as creating technically advanced underwear that reflects its passion for fit, Charnos has been keen to be seen as a fashion leader. Designs are trend-led and previous brand models have included Yasmin le Bon and Penny Lancaster, plus British couture designer Bruce Oldfield has previously created a Charnos line.

"Bioform is about making the very best of what the lady has already. It gives you rigidity where you want it and softness where you need it"

Richard Seymour, designer, Charnos’ Bioform bra
