Ever since the young Brigitte Bardot was papped in St Tropez wearing one of his designs, stars and A-listers have adored Roberto Cavalli.

Born into a well-known artistic family in 1940, he studied at the Florence Academy of Art, experimenting with printing on unusual fabrics. His series of flower prints on knitwear caught the eye of important Italian hosiery factories and his career took off. Aged 30, he showed his first Roberto Cavalli collection at the Parisian Salon for Prêt-à-Porter. There, his patchwork leathers, denim prints and intricate embellishments using precious metals, brocades and animal prints sealed his reputation for extravagance.

Today, the king of red-carpet glamour counts Jennifer Lopez, the Beckhams and the Sex and the City girls among his adoring fans.
