You want to buy it, but you’ve got something just like it

Most people have limited money and limited wardrobe space, so are we being foolish by buying repeats of the same sorts of clothes? You may well end up with a room full of relatively similar items – is this wasteful or savvy?

On the one hand, some folk have very specific styles they follow and they know what works for them. If this is the case they may choose a range of similar items because that’s what their style demands. If you look good in a certain style then having a couple of variations of it and making that style suit a variety of situations is smart shopping. Having a solid sense of who you are should be seen as as much of a strength as being able to wear a variety of ‘looks’. If you already have something similar you can feel confident that this will complement your look. It can even be justified as a back-up when you’ve forgotten to wash the original! The obvious danger is that people might think you are being a little lazy with it and actually wearing the same items over and over again. Plus, some might say it’s boring.

Menswear

Why not branch out and buy something in a different style, colour or material than what you are used to – show people that you are versatile and interesting? A fair point, but it could be argued that it’s good to know who you are. Many people flicker between styles and fashions, constantly having to update and alter their wardrobe, which is fun, but not for everyone. Do you feel more able to justify spending when it’s on an entirely new item – that may or may not work with your existing clothes?

If you’re sartorially shy you just need to be clever about how similar the items are and how you rotate them. Think about switching brand new jeans with an older, more worn pair. Wear items that suit the occasion –practical when you’re out and about, whilst more smart for a dinner party.

I guess it can’t be a waste if you are going to wear it. If you know what works for you and you aren’t going to make everyone think you only have the one shirt then it’s worth getting another similar one to complement your style. What do you think?
