The Velvet Underground: A Sumptuous Autumn Trend

Vetements

We have been seeing lots of velvet recently, and all thanks to the AW16 catwalks, which saw designers such as Stella McCartney, Vetements, Roksanda and more create unique looks with the versatile fabric. From creating fluid movements to giving looks different types of textures and mediums, it’s no wonder that designers have taken a shine to this vintage fabric.

This time round, velvet isn’t just being used for a romantic nostalgic feel, but has instead appeared in a shocking array of bright hues and shades. From Valentino evoking the seduction of dance, to Roksanda’s classically cut collection with different variations of velvet in different colours, we’re definitely seeing velvet in a different light this season.

At Stella McCartney, the oversized puffer coat was making a comeback: with longer sleeves and an oversized silhouette, velvet helped retain a romantic feel to an otherwise modern concept. Meanwhile at the French luxury brand Vetements, it was clear that creating a romantic look to the clothes was not the point of the collection, with velvet coats being paired with classic streetwear aesthetics that included hoodies and straight cut-off jeans.

Cut to Vivienne Westwood – the queen of punk – and velvet is incorporated in traditional tailoring to give a striking look. This contrasts strongly with Vetements, where tailored looks took a more extreme tangent being paired as they were with plaid shirts.

The trend of Velvet is definitely going to become a go to for everyone wanting something new to wear, and with these designs coming out, why wouldn’t you?
