How to Wash and Care for Your Cashmere

There’s nothing like relaxing in a sumptuously soft cashmere jumper or wrapping up in a cashmere scarf during the colder months.

The feel-good fabric is warm and cosy beyond compare and we can’t think of a single other item of clothing that tops our Christmas list year after year.

It can really amp up an outfit whether you’re off to brunch with the girls, or having an off-duty weekend; nothing else quite adds class and style to an outfit so effortlessly. With that said, many of us put off washing our cashmere items and with autumn and winter all about adding texture to your outfits, now’s the time to get your cosy knits out of the attic.

Follow our easy care guide on how to wash and clean your cashmere to ensure it stays in tip-top condition year after year…

How to hand wash cashmere

It’s a common misconception that the best way to care for cashmere garments is to dry clean them. Although dry cleaning can be quick and easy, they often use harsh chemicals that may wear down the fibres.

Instead, preserve the quality of the material by taking care of at it home. Hand washing  cashmere is the best and often most effective way of cleaning it:

  1. Clean out your sink or basin to ensure there are no other chemicals or products in there and fill it with cool or lukewarm water.
  2. Add a cap-full of detergent to the water (we recommend using a specific cashmere detergent or one for delicates).
  3. Turn the item inside out and gently squeeze it through the water.
  4. Rinse and repeat and allow to soak for ten minutes.
  5. After this time, rinse your garment with cool water until the water runs clear.
  6. Instead of ringing out or squeezing, roll up the item in an old towel to soak up the excess water and lay it out flat to air dry. Try to avoid handing with a clothes hanger as it may lose its shape.
  7. Et voila!

Can I machine wash cashmere?

The answer to this is yes – if your cashmere is machine-washable (check the care label). If so, place your item/s in a laundry bag or neutral coloured pillowcase with a similar knit or on its own.

Again use delicate fabric detergents or baby shampoo which is just as gentle, though we recommend skipping the fabric conditioner. Wash on a  very cool mode or delicate cycle on your machine. Reshape when damp and air dry flat.

Storage

You’ve bought yourself a luxury cashmere sweater so make sure you give it the TLC it deserves. Store it in a cupboard, drawer or shelf that’s damp-free and clean.

Ward off moths with anti-moth paper or invest in some cedar balls. Try to avoid storing your cashmere in cardboard boxes as the chemicals could mix with your garments. Instead, look for breathable clothes bags that’ll keep your jumpers and accessories safe and sound.

Store any clothes in well-aired, dust-free spaces and keep away from sunlight. It would be a tragedy if your favourite pink scarf faded in the sun!

Care and repair

It’s worth investing in some reconditioning treatments for your cashmere every few years. Some specialists, such as Pure Collection’s care & repair service, can depile, defuzz, remove stains and can make minor repairs for a fee.
