Behind the scenes of our Cosmopolitan Magazine shoot – part 3: ‘Borrowed from the boys’

The final look for our Standout Style shoot with Cosmopolitan Magazine was a personal favourite of stylist Holly Coopey – channelling your other half in your everyday wardrobe.

So Holly, how can you help us nail the I-just-woke-up-and-threw-this-on kind of style?

“Boys are good for many things, including owning lots of cosy oversized clothes that you can pinch (and not return). This is a trend that has developed from authentic borrowed items to designers restructuring and resizing their designs, to rename them ‘The Boyfriend Fit’. A staple borrowed-from-the-boyfriend item is the crisp white shirt. Unbelievably, this was seen to be too sexy to be worn as outerwear before the 20th century. Imagine the world without handsome men in razor-sharp white shirts. Actually, let’s not!

The ‘Borrowed from the Boys’ look is really casual. Think wide-leg trousers and anything denim. Try pairing tailored pieces with leather and studs. Plus, a grey jumper is the one thing I would is worth investing in or stealing from the man in your life. They go with everything.

And feel free to play with the way you style your outfit. Tuck in shirts, roll up your sleeves and jeans, flick up your collar and wear battered old trainers. The smallest touches make a huge difference to the overall look. It’s lazy dressing that is actually really thought through. Ironic, I know.  Opt for simple colours, like khaki, black, white, grey and cream, with minimal prints. Think Scandinavian and cool.

It’s a really easy look you can rock from desk-to-drinks. Simply throw on a cashmere jumper with leather skinnies plus a pair of courts and you will look effortlessly chic. As for accessories, wear a big boyfriend watch and simple silver jewellery.”
