How Streetwear and Luxury Fashion Have Become One

How Streetwear is Slowly Taking Over Luxury Fashion Vetements

Since the inception of Yeezy, streetwear and luxury fashion have been carving their very own niche.

Whether it be fashion editors in their Vetements hoodies or street style stars in their Gosha Rubchinskiy sweatshirts, it’s pretty evident that streetwear is slowly taking over the fashion world.

This streetwear and luxury fashion movement is still very much influenced by rap & RnB music. Experiencing a revival in the past few years with artists such as A$AP Rocky, the genre has been forging ties with the fashion industry. A$AP Rocky himself has collaborated with J.W Anderson and taken on the role as brand ambassador for Dior Homme. Jaden Smith too, has made waves with a cover for GQ Style borne from his role in influential style & music series The Get Down.

These and other factors have slowly allowed streetwear and luxury fashion to become more acceptable, and is making its mark with the help of designers such as Raf Simons and Rick Owens.

With new designers come new ways of looking at the industry. The streetwear aesthetic has definitely become more about punk in recent years than it ever has, with designers like Demna Gvasalia and Gosha Rubchinskiy setting the tone. Other popular streetwear brands such as Supreme, A Bathing Ape and Kith have had kids and hypebeasts lining up for their latest collections or collaboration drops for years. These streetwear and luxury fashion designers have aligned themselves with the practices of the music industry: T-shirts – not singles – will be flogged people wanting to identify themselves with the brand and its ethos. It’s no surprise therefore, that other popular streetwear-inspired brands such as Rick Owens have developed unique cult followings behind them.

Streetwear has come full circle and will no doubt continue to become ingrained in the industry of luxury fashion. With the help of designers such as Raf Simons and Rick Owens getting glowing reviews from their shows, streetwear is definitely here to stay a while.
