Now that hotels have finally reopened, we’re desperate to get on a UK staycation. Holidays abroad may be on the horizon, but, to be safe, you may prefer to head on a local trip. With UK cities for pretty much every taste and preference, from seaside towns to urban areas in the North of UK and the South, there’s so much to keep you busy. So, from the historic area of Bath to the modern metropolis of Liverpool, here’s our top picks of the top UK city getaway spots worth a visit – that aren’t just London.

Nottingham

The city of Nottingham is rich in culture, history and entertainment. The home of Robin Hood and Nottingham Castle, spend a day soaking up knowledge in the castle, then head to one of the UK’s best (and oldest) pub, Grade II listed Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem.

Spend the next day mooching around the bohemian area of Hockley, known for its incredible selection of vintage stores and seriously cool music scene – a truly inspiring creative area.

When it comes to hotels, immerse yourself in culture and stay at the Lace Market Hotel, near Nottingham’s Contemporary museum (also worth a visit). With just 42 rooms it’s an intimate, artful space, befitting of Nottingham’s rich architecture and offerings.

Manchester

Fondly known as the UK’s second city, there’s plenty going on in Manchester to keep you occupied. With enough shopping going on to drain your bank account in seconds (the Selfridges and Harvey Nichols opposite each other are particularly dangerous), Manchester boasts classic, impressive architecture against contrasting modern builds.

Catch a show or some live music at one of the city’s many venues, which we recommend are best enjoyed alongside a locally sourced craft beer.

When it comes to food, where to start? Eat some of the best Indian food in the country at one of many eateries across the infamous Curry Mile, sample a traditional Afternoon Tea with a twist at Hotel Gotham or have a taste of Brazil in the mouth watering Fazenda. Once you’re sufficiently in a food coma, head back to historic The Midland Hotel for a nightcap and well-earned night’s sleep.

Bath

Arguably one of the UK’s most picturesque cities and with a rich Roman history, make the time for a weekend in Bath. From promenading down the celebrated royal crescent (which you may recognise from Bridgerton) to practising your photography skills in the striking Roman baths, you’ll dream of one day moving to the Somerset town.

There’s plenty to whet your appetite in Bath, too, with mouth watering bistros to low-key casual dining and coffee houses worth a visit. When it comes to your stay, make it a spa weekend and rest up at the Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel.

Edinburgh

You’ll struggle to visit everything you’d like to do in one weekend at the Scottish capital. However, don’t let that deter you, simply make the most of your time there.

Your first stop? A walk up the infamous Arthur’s Seat to take in the views all around the city. Keep your legs moving and head uphill to Edinburgh Castle to learn more about the city’s history. Be charmed by the shops and restaurants down the beautiful Royal Mile, and perhaps take a drink or two.

The city has a great nightlife too, with bar Suberico (a favourite of Lewis Capaldi) being a great spot for a quick bite, and some incredible flavoursome cocktails. Complete the trip with a stay at the trendy Malmaison hotel in Leith, near the coast.

Brighton

Keep things coastal with a trip to Brighton. If you’re hoping for a hint of culture, start your trip with a visit to the grand Royal Pavilion. Another non-negotiable – spend your time on the Brighton pier, and embrace your inner big kids by riding on the amusements.

When it comes to dining, a trip to the seaside has to include a large portion of fish and chips consumed on the beach. If that’s not for you, the lanes have plenty of small restaurants and independent businesses to try. For something different, sleep at an Airbnb for the local experience – there’s plenty on offer at competitive prices.

Liverpool

Head back to the North West of England for a city filled with entertainment and culture – Liverpool. Most popularly known as the home of The Beatles, whether you’re a fan or not of the group, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Start your visit at The Beatles Story museum on the Albert Dock, then promenade down the colonnades, stopping for a drink or bite to eat at one of many bars and restaurants, enjoying the views over the water. Keep the evening going with a trip to the historic Cavern Club, then call it a night.

The next day, head back to the Albert Dock for some more museum time and modern art at the Tate Liverpool. The beautiful gothic Liverpool cathedral is also worth a visit, as is Liverpool central library. When it comes to dining, take a trip to Lark Lane for some tasty independent gems. Stay at the four-star Titanic Hotel, filled with unique rooms with plenty of character.

Cardiff

The capital of Wales has to be included in our UK city getaway spots. For something a little different, why not begin your trip at the Bute Park Culture Trail? With over 130 acres of greenery, take a picnic and enjoy the fresh air. Keep the momentum going with a visit to the historic Cardiff Castle. Just five minutes away, Cardiff central market has been going since the 1700’s, and boasts plenty of locally sold homeware, clothing and even some food – we seriously recommend a slice of cake and coffee.

Another day could be spent visiting BBC Wales headquarters, getting a tour and learning how television and video are produced. Once done, eat your way around the Cardiff Bay, we recommend Ffresh Cabaret Bar, and end the evening overlooking the bay and water. For an intimate stay, head to The Crofts B&B – it may be small, but the hotel is rated five stars.

You’re sure to have a lively weekend spent in Newcastle upon Tyne. Start as you mean to go on and head to the Quayside for a modern hub of art, music and culture, especially on a Saturday night.

If you’re not nursing too much of a sore head the next day, take a look at the fantastic structure of the Tyne Bridge. Made with over 7,000 tonnes of steel, this iconic structure is not to be missed. Plus, if you have time, visit the UK’s biggest commercial art gallery, The Biscuit Factory to see some incredible arts, craft and design.  Kick back and relax, booking a stay at the refurbished Edwardian Hotel du Vin.

Bristol

Travel to the beautiful British seaside in the south, Bristol. Release your animal instinct and start your trip by heading to the Bristol Zoo, known for their work protecting endangered animals. If you’re more of an urban dweller, it’s one of the best cities for graffiti hotspots, particularly at the skate parks. The best way to explore? By hiring a bike, of course.

Feed your coffee addiction with an artisan coffee in the Small Street area, and get spending at the independent Strokes Croft area. For an alternative view of the city, take a tour on the waterboats which are easy to hop on and off if you see something of intrigue. For something different, book a private stay at the Mystique Barn.
