In the strange times we’ve faced over the past year, many of us have sought out a sense of familiarity and solace amongst our favourite novels. Be it the piece you’ve read time and time again, your favourite book that you’d always recommend to a friend or start a book club for – from bestselling stories to recipe books – here’s the comfort books that the BrandAlley team reach for in times of necessity.

Comfort Book Recommendations

The book that brings me the most comfort would have to be The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho. I love this novel as it’s a very easy and short read but at the same time so impactful.
It tells the inspirational story of a boy who dreamt of a treasure and left everything behind to search for it. Eventually he meets the Alchemist who teaches him to look for omens and pushes him to pursue his dreams. This book is full of wisdom that will give you a different perspective on life and a fresh motivation to follow your heart.

I can’t help but always think back to One Day by David Nichols. This story of two kindred spirits whose lives intertwine through friendship, life experience and love over the course of decades, really is so wonderful.

This novel broke my heart, made me laugh, made me cry, and reminds you that life really is so wonderful. It’s a testament to the universe and how it has a funny way of forging your path for you.

I always seem to find my way back to the Harry Potter series time and time again. Although it may seem cliche, there’s always a new element to the story that surprises me upon each reread, so it’s almost like starting it for the first time!
It also really reminds me of my childhood. I love the films and find it a really comforting read, especially Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, which I would have to say is my favourite of them all.

Although it’s a relatively new piece, Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams has gone straight to the top of my list. Upon the first read I devoured it all in one sitting, and have since come back to it more than once.

It’s a story of race, identity, prejudice, sex and empowerment, set in recognisable areas of London. The characterisations are so vivid you can really build the story in your head, and it’s a true rollercoaster of emotions. It’s soon to be adapted into a TV series, and I can’t wait to see it on screen.

For me, eating and reading are both soothers, so my comfort book for comfort food is Xian Foods Cookbook!
Since lockdown I’ve been exceptionally interested in exploring the different flavours of my ancestral background, and recreating all of my favourite recipes – especially the flat noodles.

Whilst my go-to book isn’t necessarily ‘cool’ or ‘profound’, it’s something I adore, and that’s what’s familiarity is all about to me.

It’s called I Heart New York by Lindsey Kelk, which is part of a whole ‘I Heart’ series. I first read this book when I was about sixteen and completely fell in love with the main character, dreaming of the life she went on to lead. It’s based on heartbreak, strong women, independence and following dreams. I’ve read it multiple times since, and probably still could.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. I adore this book and how beautifully written it is. It makes my heart ache and I can’t get through it without crying my eyes out – every single time!
I come back to it about once every two years or so, finding myself often thinking of the characters like they’re old friends I have lost contact with. I think the reason I love it so much (apart from the obvious – it’s just a wonderful book) is because it is so dark, and disturbing but still full of beauty, just like real life.

For familiarity and some sense of comfort, I would say I’m a keen follower of Vogue magazine. I have the monthly subscription which is delivered directly to my door for added ease, too. I especially enjoy reading about the latest fashion trends and new and up and coming designers.

A real hobby of mine is picking out catwalk trends which I’ve seen in Vogue and then trying to replicate them with clothing, shoes and accessories from the high street and, of course BrandAlley! The satisfaction of recreating a designer item or ensemble at a significant discount is amazing.
