Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood

The woman who invented the punk aesthetic, Vivienne Westwood is a treasure of contemporary culture. Her seminal designs and forward-thinking fantasies make her one of the foremost innovators in the world. Immerse yourself in the Vivienne Westwood aesthetic.

Beginning life as a teacher with an ordinary husband, Westwood soon met Malcolm McClaren, the future manager of the Sex Pistols. In 1971, he opened a boutique shop on the Kings Road which Westwood filled with her controversial designs.

T-shirts, trousers and shoes that were designed to shock proved popular with the art crowd of 1970s London, and Vivienne Westwood’s use of rubber, mesh, leather and metal became the punk uniform of the day. She even dressed the Sex Pistols when McClaren became their manager.

Outspoken back in the day, this English icon is now a voice for environmental change. She has been named British designer of the year twice and has been awarded an O.B.E.

Her first official collection, Pirate, was shown in 1981, taking a flamboyant turn from her punk origins, and heading down a more frilled route.

Today, her designs are still received with critical acclaim; her logo recognised across countries around the world.
