Apex Mattress: Tech Spotlight
1. Luxury. By Nature.
The Apex mattress is, quite simply, paradise. With the sort of pillowy, cloud-like cushioning that helps you relax the minute you lie on it.?? ?
Our engineers wanted to create a sensation of being very, very gently hugged. At the perfect temperature. They found the answer in nature’s most sumptuous creations. First, luxurious wool for moisture management and soft cashmere (upcycled from a British designer fashion house), renowned for their thermoregulating powers. Then mohair; known for centuries as the ‘diamond fibre’, famed for its velvety sheen and strength. Next up organic silk, irresistibly smooth but also reputedly one of the strongest natural fabrics on the planet. The result was wondrous. We experienced sublime cushioning and temperature control.?
But we’ve also designed the Apex to feel as blissful throughout its life as it does on Day 1. Step forward Yorkshire grown hemp and flax, famous through the centuries for their resilience, durability and breathability.
2. QuadCore™ spring base
Few people know more about springs than our mattress experts. So when they told us they’d created a new, even better design, we were all ears.
Usually mattress springs are connected to each other in rows or large groups. So any movement one spring makes is passed on to the next, and the next after that. Across the entire mattress. But our clever QuadCore™ springs are grouped just four at a time, disrupting any ripple effect and limiting motion transfer to encourage more tailored, accurate support.
But that’s not all. Fixing springs with glue can damage them and inhibit movement, so the team were excited to discover another way of connecting them: sonic welding. It sounds cool, and it is – this way the springs themselves remain untouched, undamaged and free to move individually.
3. Designed for superb support.
The Aerocoil® spring was our first baby, but for our sublime Apex mattress, we decided we needed to extend the family. Because the way we see it, more springs means more support and more breathability. For a better night’s sleep.
2,500 titanium alloy, Aerocoil® micro springs nestle in the upper layers. They’re pocketed and cone-shaped; you can’t feel them, but they compress gently in response to your body shape. encouraging responsive support and limiting transfer of movement.
2,500 high carbon steel micro springs sit further down the mattress. They’re barrel-shaped and pocketed, helping to provide extra support for your heavier bits like hips and shoulders, and allowing fresh air to flow through the mattress.
750 high carbon steel QuadCore™ springs make up the sturdy foundation of the mattress. They’re pocketed and grouped in fours to encourage extra-tailored responsiveness, and sonically welded (rather than glued) together, to limit unwanted spring movement.
4. Hand tufted with care
Our Earth mattresses start life on a Yorkshire farm, not a factory. Because that’s where many of the crops and materials we use are grown, harvested, and processed.
The factory where our experienced craftsmen and women work their magic is in Yorkshire too. And although we might use high-tech machines to give us the precise measurements and weights for every layer, it’s these highly skilled teams that stitch and tuft the layers, feeling the mattress, checking the stitching. The way it’s been done for centuries.
An exceptional craft, for an exceptional mattress.
